The Tournament Mastery of Michael Wang
The Tournament Mastery of Michael Wang

Over the past 12 months, very few players in the world come close to the number of times Michael Wang has cashed. The PokerStake seller, so profitable at the live felt, has banked an incredible $2.17 million in live tournament earnings since the start of 2025, an astonishing 40 cashes contributing to that total.

After putting packages on sale in series such as the 2025 World Series of Poker, the Seminole Hard Rock Poker Open and the current Triton Poker Series in Jeju. Having passed $9 million in live poker earnings alone, we’ve dug into the history of one of PokerStake’s most in-form players and one that has earned his peers’ respect.

The Early Years

“Once it got heads-up, it felt like a different dynamic.”

Michael Wang’s poker career has made several big stops along the way since he first cashed way back in 2009 in Verona in the $1,500-entry NLHE Continental Poker Championship. Winning the event for $32,685 after beating Matthew Forrest heads-up, it was just the beginning for Michael, who went on the win the first open event of the 2015 World Series of Poker.

Conquering the $5,000-entry NLHE event for $466,120, Michael described the feeling of winning his first bracelet – a huge moment in the career of any player.

“It’s the icing on the cake when you’re able to outlast all of them,” said Michael. “[Bryn Kenney]] was running over the table a little bit. I got three-bet a lot and didn’t find spots to re-raise. It was a little bit difficult but once it got heads-up, it felt like a different dynamic. I didn’t have to worry about ICM and could just play for the win.”

Seeing the WSOP as ‘validation’ Michael remained a modest guy and a tournament player with the perfect temperament at the table. Ten years on from that win, his game has improved even further and built on that success with a focus on bankroll management and game development.

Falling in Love with Las Vegas

“I can see why all of the top high-stakes players love playing here.”

Back in early 2022, Michael starred in the pioneering Stairway to Millions series inside the PokerGO Studio at ARIA on the Las Vegas strip.  Not only did he bag a big tournament win, but he did so on the first occasion he’d played in the venue. His excitement afterwards was obvious.

“I can see why all of the top high-stakes players love playing here,” he said. “From start to finish, it’s been a great experience. I’m really glad I ran well to start my series. I haven’t been playing too many high rollers, but I’m starting to get my feet wet a little bit and it’s good to not immediately be stuck 50 buy-ins.”

Michael’s prowess in high rollers since has been legendary. Proving himself in the toughest tournaments in the world, Michael is now comfortable at the highest stakes and the toughest cardrooms. Taking on all comers, he’s been successful in all of the series we mentioned before, whether it is in Florida, Triton stops around the world, or Las Vegas, otherwise known as home.

The Swings of Success

“The swings that you can go through in poker are absolutely nuts.”

In an interview with the World Poker Tour after he won their Main Event in Montreal back in November of 2024, Michael described how his self-belief has fuelled his success in live tournament poker.

“I feel like I always have a shot in tournaments,” he said. “No matter how much you’re stuck, you always have a chance to crawl out. I’ve never felt bad with a bad result; I feel the worst when I feel like I punted or played really bad, because that’s the only thing you can control in the long run. You’re going to drive yourself crazy if you sweat the day-to-day.”

Michael’s resolute nature has been tested many times over the years, but he has always been able to manage those swings of fortune. His honesty on the subject is refreshing.

“At the same time, I’d be lying if I said it wasn’t affecting me a bit. The swings that you can go through in poker are absolutely nuts. I was like, ‘Man, this, you know, this really sucks.’ There were a couple days where I was like, ‘Oh man, am I even good at poker?’”

Michael’s self-belief, tempered by a stoic, sensible edge is what makes him one of the very best players to sell action on PokerStake.
