How Does Buying a WSOP Player Package Work?
How Does Buying a WSOP Player Package Work?

The 57th annual World Series of Poker (WSOP) is right around the corner and when it comes to buying action, it has to be PokerStake. With some of the world’s best players selling action at the WSOP, who to put your money behind is the only question. But once you’ve registered on the site and set up your buyer profile, you might want to invest in a player’s WSOP package. So how does buying a package of events change from backing a player in individual events?

Let’s take a look.

What Does a PokerStake Player Package Cover?

When you put your money into a player package, you’re not backing them in a single WSOP event. Instead, you’re backing them across a range of events, known as a package. Your stake is split across all the events they play in that package and you receive winnings based on how your percentage equates to all the events listed in the package.

For example, if you were to back Allen Kessler’s $10k+ Mixed Games Package, then you’d be backing ‘Chainsaw’ in all of the $10,000+ buy-in mixed game events at this year’s World Series of Poker. From H.O.R.S.E. to Stud Hi Lo, 2-7 Triple Draw to 8-Game Mix, Allen is one of the favorites in those fields and spreading your investment across this package is already proving very popular with buyers on the site.

Allen is selling at zero markup to this package, meaning for each event, you’re buying the action as an equal percentage. Many sellers charge markup on their packages due to their perceived edge on the field and therefore you might buy at 1.10 and pay that extra 10% of each percentile on the money you put down because they’re a crusher in that format. Given Allen’s ability in mixed games, this package represents great value.

Buy Low, Win Big

While backing a player in a single tournament can be very profitable – they could go on to win the event, or finish top three for example, backing a player across their whole package spreads the risk and can often lead to more reliable profit. Allen Kessler’s Small Mixed Game Package sees him selling 30% of his action to events that cost less than $5,000 to play and in some cases, as little as $600.

Once again, spreading the cost over this type of package levels out the variance that might come from backing Allen – or any other players – in multiple events outside of a package. While you could just as easily be on the right side of variance and back Allen in a couple of events he final tables for massive profit, you could be unlucky, backing him in a handful of events he doesn’t cash in.

By backing a player in a package, you aren’t guaranteeing a return of profit but you are almost guaranteeing some return on your investment. A player such as Allen Kessler has a strong record in mixed games, and last year earned multiple money finishes. Should that happen again this summer, you can sweat the remaining events knowing you already have some return on your money, which is a great feeling.
